This paper discusses the Republic of Belarus or Respublika Belarus that is located in East Central Europe. . It is bounded by Russia to the east, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and the Baltic republics of Latvia and Lithuania to the northwest. It measures 207,595 square kilometers, has a generally level terrain with many highlands from the northeast to the southwest parts (Marples 2003). Its geographical regions consist of lakes, hills and forests in the north, agricultural forests in the west, a broad and elevated land in the east, and a lowland of rivers, called Polesye, in the south. Forests cover a third of the country's area.
