In this paper we will Compare and contrast Montesquieu’s ideal of “moderate government” with John Locke’s ideal of “limited government.” In developing this comparison, we will consider the following questions; what principles and methods do they advocate to achieve their ideals and defend liberty? How are their approaches different and how they are similar? What are the strengths and weaknesses of their different approaches? After answering these questions, we will hypothesize a new government and choose a preference over ‘limited’ and/or ‘moderate’, and explain why.
