Economic Crisis and Democratic Transition: A Correlative Analysis
This five-page undergraduate paper examines The Political Economy of Democratic Transitions, by Stephen Haggard and Robert Kaufman, who argue convincingly that economic crisis can determine the timing of a democratic transition, the type of transition that takes place, the structure of the new democratic state, and the prospects for consolidating the transition. The author notes that in comparing and contrasting Mexico and Taiwan, two of the nations they have included in their study, it is evident that they have correctly identified the correlations between economic crises and democratic transition in Mexico, and the potential correlations in Taiwan.
