This paper is about television news media and social control that creates a pacific population. In his book The Social and Economic History of the Roman Empire, author M. Rostovtzeff writes that the institution of entertaining the mob was embraced by the ruling classes of Rome as a means of alleviating social tensions, and that the reasons for providing free entertainment were found within the need to maintain a calm social presence.
