This paper considers the influence Islam has upon the economy and society of Saudi Arabia and how that influence might be changing, as has been happening as a more conservative element has become more powerful and as various forces have created tensions in Saudi Arabia, among them economic problems, the Gulf War followed by the war in Iraq, attitudes expressed by the American press, and so on.
